Partnership facts

• Gemini Ganesan was initially hesitant to pair with Vanisri because she was much younger. He only agreed after director A. C. Tirulokchandar convinced him that her intensity would match his own.
• On the sets of Thamarai Nenjam (1968), Vanisri would deliberately flub her lines to make Gemini Ganesan laugh. He then started doing the same to her. The director kept the takes where they broke character — those became the film's most charming scenes.
• Their film Velli Vizha (1972) directly inspired the 1990s trend of 'family revenge dramas' in Tamil cinema. Director K. Balachander later admitted he rewatched it before making his own Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal.
• Vanisri and Gemini Ganesan never spoke to each other outside the sets. Not once. She said it helped them maintain the 'tension' their roles required. After Kanchi Kamakshi (1978), they never met again.
• Vanisri once said: 'He would look at me with those eyes, and I would forget my lines. Not because I was nervous — because I was angry. He knew exactly how to push me.'
