Sridevi and Jeetendra appeared together in 11 Hindi films between 1983 and 1988. Their highest-rated collaboration was Justice Chaudhury (1983 — 6.5/10). Films span Jaani Dost (1983) through Sone Pe Suhaaga (1988).
The Sridevi & Jeetendra partnership
Between 1983 and 1988, they barely worked apart — 11 films in 5 years. 1983 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months. For 5 years, a Sridevi–Jeetendra film arrived almost every year.
From Jaani Dost (1983) to Sone Pe Suhaaga (1988). The unfolded closed with Sone Pe Suhaaga in 1988.
The shape of the work
Sridevi acted in every film; Jeetendra acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- They were thrown together because B. Subhash needed a fresh pair for 'Himmatwala' after his earlier hits with Jeetendra and different heroines. Sridevi was just 19 and already a huge star in the South, but this was her first big Hindi masala film. Jeetendra personally vouched for her, telling Subhash she could match his energy step for step.
- Jeetendra was known for his fast, robotic dance moves — but Sridevi made him loosen up. On the set of 'Himmatwala', she would deliberately mess up the choreography to make him laugh, and he'd retaliate by pulling her dupatta mid-step. That playful tension became their signature: he set the rhythm, she broke it.
- Their pairing directly launched the 'item number' trend in Hindi cinema. The song 'Nainon Mein Sapna' from 'Himmatwala' was the first time a mainstream Bollywood film had a heroine dance in a revealing outfit for a purely commercial, non-plot number. Every producer after that wanted a 'Sridevi-style' dance sequence.
- Off-screen, they barely spoke. Jeetendra was a family man who went home to his wife every evening; Sridevi was a shy teenager living with her mother. On the sets of 'Mawaali', she once refused to come out of her vanity van because Jeetendra had cracked a joke about her Tamil accent. He had to send her a handwritten note apologizing.
- Jeetendra later said in an interview: 'She was like a wild horse. I had to run just to keep up. But if I slowed down, she'd overtake me completely. That's why our films worked — we were both racing.'
