The T. L. V. Prasad & Mithun Chakraborty partnership

Between 1995 and 2001, they barely worked apart — 13 films in 6 years. 1997 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months. For 6 years, a T.–Mithun film arrived almost every year.

From Jallaad (1995) to Bhairav (2001). The ran closed with Bhairav in 2001.

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 92% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Hitler; the 2000s to Bhairav. T. L. V. Prasad directed every film; Mithun Chakraborty acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Director T. L. V. Prasad first cast Mithun Chakraborty in 'Jallaad' (1995) after seeing him in a masala action film. Prasad needed a star who could do his own stunts and still sell a cheap ticket. Mithun said yes without reading the full script.
  • On the set of 'Muqaddar' (1996), Mithun would rewrite his own dialogue in Hindi on the spot because Prasad's original lines were too literal from Telugu. Prasad let him do it. That's why Mithun's character in that film sounds nothing like the written script.
  • Prasad and Mithun never had a formal contract. They worked on a handshake for all 13 films. Mithun once said in an interview that Prasad would just call him and say 'Mithun da, next month?' and he'd show up.
  • Their 1998 film 'Hitler' was the first Hindi movie to use the word 'Hitler' in its title. It wasn't about the dictator — it was a revenge drama. But the title alone got it banned in Germany and caused a minor diplomatic headache for the producers.
  • In 'Bhairav' (2001), their last film together, Mithun insisted on doing a 10-minute single-take fight scene. Prasad didn't have the budget for retakes, so he just let the camera roll. Mithun broke two ribs during the shoot. Prasad never asked him to do it again.
