• Their first film together, Naukar Biwi Ka (1983), was a comedy where Dharmendra played a servant. Raj Babbar was the villain. The director, B. R. Ishara, deliberately cast them against type — Dharmendra, the action hero, doing slapstick, and Babbar, the intense actor, playing a sleazy boss. It worked so well they made eight more films.
• In Ganga Tere Desh Mein (1988), Dharmendra played the righteous elder brother and Raj Babbar the corrupt one. The entire climax hinges on Babbar’s character refusing to repent — and Dharmendra’s character breaking down. Babbar later said in an interview that Dharmendra deliberately held back his usual loud energy in that scene, letting Babbar’s silence do the work. That restraint is why the scene still gets clipped on YouTube.
• Raj Babbar has said in multiple interviews that Dharmendra was the one who pushed him to take up negative roles in the 1980s. Babbar was hesitant because he wanted to be a hero. Dharmendra told him flatly: 'Tum villain bano ge toh log yaad rakhenge. Hero toh hazaron hain.' (If you play villains, people will remember you. There are thousands of heroes.) Babbar took the advice and became one of the most iconic villains of the decade.
• Their 2024 film Desh Ke Gaddar is the only film in Hindi cinema history where two actors who first worked together in 1983 reunited after 41 years for a new project. No other pair has a gap that wide between first and last collaboration.
• Raj Babbar, on why he agreed to do Fauji (1995) despite its low budget: 'Dharam ji ne phone kiya aur kaha — 'Babbar, mere saath ek film kar lo. Budget nahi hai, par script achhi hai.' Main gaya. Unke saath main kabhi mana nahi kar sakta.' (Dharam ji called and said — 'Babbar, do one film with me. There's no budget, but the script is good.' I went. I can never say no to him.)
