• They first worked together in 1968's 'Genesis' when Om Puri was still a struggling FTII graduate and Shabana Azmi was a newcomer. Director Mrinal Sen cast them specifically because he wanted raw, non-glamorous faces — both were unknowns then.
• In 'Mrityudand' (1997), Om Puri played a violent, alcoholic husband opposite Shabana Azmi's abused wife. She later said he deliberately held back his intensity in rehearsals so her shock in the actual scene would be real — he saved his full rage for the camera take.
• Despite making five films together over three decades, Om Puri and Shabana Azmi never became close friends off-screen. They respected each other's craft but had very different social circles — she was politically active, he kept to himself. They never once had a meal together outside a set.
• Shabana Azmi once said about Om Puri: 'He was the only actor who could make me feel like I was acting opposite a wall — and I mean that as a compliment. He gave nothing until the camera rolled, then everything.'
• Their 1990 film 'Disha' — about a man who returns to his village after failing in the city — directly inspired the plot of the 2003 Bollywood hit 'Swades'. Director Ashutosh Gowariker has cited 'Disha' as a key influence for the film's central conflict.
