Partnership facts

• D. Yoganand cast K. R. Vijaya in 'Grihapravesam' (1976) after she impressed him in a small role in someone else's film. He later said he wrote the lead specifically for her because he needed an actress who could cry on cue without glycerin.
• On the sets of 'Justice Gopinath' (1978), Vijaya would often rewrite her own dialogues in Tamil because Yoganand's original lines were too literary. He let her do it. That film became a sleeper hit largely because her colloquial punchlines landed with family audiences.
• During the shoot of 'Naan Vazhavaippen' (1979), Vijaya's mother passed away. Yoganand shut down production for two weeks and paid the entire crew from his own pocket so she could grieve without worrying about the schedule. She never forgot that.
• 'Sumangali' (1983) was the first Tamil film to have a female protagonist who walks out of a toxic marriage without a tragic ending. That template — a woman choosing herself — directly inspired K. Balachander's 'Sindhu Bhairavi' two years later.
• K. R. Vijaya once told a magazine: 'Yoganand sir never shouted at me. Even when I messed up a scene, he'd just say, 'Let's try again, child.' That made me work twice as hard for him.'
• In 'Sarithira Nayagan' (1984), Yoganand deliberately gave Vijaya no close-ups during the climax confrontation. He wanted her body language alone to carry the emotion. She delivered it in one take. He later told the crew that was the best performance he ever directed.
