• K. Balaji was a rising villain when he was cast opposite K. R. Vijaya in Karuppu Panam (1964). But the director, S. S. Balan, almost didn't pair them — he thought Vijaya's innocent face would clash with Balaji's rough image. Vijaya insisted on a screen test. It worked. That film became their first hit together.
• In Pattanathil Bhootham (1967), Balaji played a ghost who falls for Vijaya's character. The comedy came from Balaji's deadpan delivery — he never broke character even when Vijaya improvised lines. She later said he set the rhythm; she just followed his pauses.
• On the sets of Thirudan (1969), Vijaya and Balaji developed a ritual: before every scene together, they'd share a single cup of filter coffee from the same tumbler. They did this for every film after, right up to Aayirathil Oruthi (1975).
• Etho Enthan Daivam (1972) was the first Tamil film where the female lead's name appeared before the male lead's in the opening credits. Vijaya insisted on it. Balaji backed her up to the producer. That decision started a small trend in Tamil cinema for the next few years.
• K. R. Vijaya once said in a 1980s interview: 'Balaji never acted like he was the hero. He let me take the scene if it needed it. That's rare. Most male stars then would cut your lines.'
