• Shyam Benegal cast Rajeshwari Sachdev in Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992) after seeing her in a theater production. She was just 22 and fresh out of NSD. He later said he picked her because she had 'the stillness of a dancer and the fire of a street fighter.'
• On the set of Samar (1999), Benegal made Sachdev rehearse a single 3-minute monologue for two full days before shooting. She later admitted that his obsessive attention to rhythm and pause taught her how to 'act with silence' — a skill she credits for every role since.
• Their third film together, Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008), was the first Hindi movie to use a letter-writing kiosk as a narrative device. The film directly inspired a 2010 Bengali remake called 'Sajjanpur' and a 2012 Marathi stage adaptation that ran for 200+ shows.
• After Samar wrapped, Benegal gifted Sachdev a handwritten copy of the Dharamvir Bharati novel that Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda was based on. She still keeps it on her bedside table. 'He never gave me a script again — just books,' she said in a 2019 interview.
• Rajeshwari Sachdev on Benegal: 'He never told me I was good. Not once in three films. But he would call me at 2 AM to discuss a line reading. That was his way of saying he trusted me.'
