Partnership facts

• They first worked together in Bheegi Palkein (1982), but the real spark came when director B.R. Chopra cast them as the lead pair in Aaj Ki Awaz (1984). Chopra had seen their raw energy in earlier films and deliberately paired them to create a 'realistic romantic tension' — something he felt neither could do with their usual co-stars.
• On the sets of Aaj Ki Awaz, Smita Patil would often improvise her lines in Marathi, and Raj Babbar would respond in Hindi — the director kept the takes because the bilingual back-and-forth made their arguments feel more authentic. Neither told the other what they'd say next.
• During the shoot of Meraa Ghar Mere Bachche (1985), Raj Babbar's wife was pregnant. Smita Patil would bring homemade food for him every day, saying 'you need to eat well for two families now.' They stayed close friends until her death in 1986.
• Their film Waaris (1988) — released two years after Smita's death — was the last Hindi film she completed. Raj Babbar personally supervised the dubbing of her remaining scenes, using her voice recordings from earlier takes. The film became a minor hit largely because fans wanted to see her one last time.
• Raj Babbar once said in an interview: 'Smita didn't act with you — she fought with you on screen. Every scene with her was a war, and I loved losing those wars.' He said this while promoting Waaris in 1988.
