- Kamal Haasan, who plays the lead, reportedly watched the original film over 100 times to perfect his performance.
- The film's title 'Papanasam' refers to a real town in Tamil Nadu, symbolizing the washing away of sins.
- Unlike many thrillers, the film was shot extensively in natural light to maintain a realistic, grounded look.
- The movie was a major box office success, running in theatres for over 100 days in several centres.
- Composer Ghibran's score uses subtle motifs instead of dramatic themes to match the film's tense, quiet mood.
- A key scene where the family alibis are tested was filmed in a single long take to increase tension.
