Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Achamillai Achamillai' (1984), but the real spark came when director K. Balachander paired them again in 'Kalyana Agathigal' (1985). Balachander deliberately cast them as contrasting characters — Delhi Ganesh the rigid father, Charlie the free-spirited son — to create tension. That film set the template for their future collaborations.
• In 'Papanasam' (2015), Delhi Ganesh played the village elder who quietly supports the protagonist. Charlie, playing a local drunk, had to improvise most of his comic lines on set. Delhi Ganesh later said Charlie's spontaneity forced him to stay sharp — he couldn't rely on his usual rehearsed delivery because Charlie would throw in a new joke every take.
• Despite making 9 films together over 31 years, they never once had a meal together off-set. Charlie was famously reclusive and would vanish between shots. Delhi Ganesh once joked, 'I know his on-screen timing better than his phone number.'
• Delhi Ganesh said about Charlie in a 2016 interview: 'He never rehearsed. He'd walk onto set, listen to the scene once, and then just... become the character. I had to match his energy or I'd look wooden next to him.'
• Their pairing in 'Raman Abdullah' (1997) — where Delhi Ganesh played a Hindu priest and Charlie a Muslim cleric — directly inspired a wave of 'communal harmony' comedies in late-90s Tamil cinema. At least three low-budget films copied the exact premise within two years.
• In 'Junior Senior' (2002), the director wanted a father-son comedy but both actors were in their 50s. So Delhi Ganesh played the 'junior' (a childish old man) and Charlie played the 'senior' (a grumpy elder). They swapped their usual screen personas — Delhi Ganesh became the clown, Charlie the straight man — and it confused audiences so much the film flopped.
