Long-Term Partnership

The Ramarajan & S. S. Chandran partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Seerivarum Kaalai (2001). They didn't share a set between 1989 and 2001. 1988 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months.

From Marudhani (1985) to Seerivarum Kaalai (2001). It started with Marudhani (1985).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 88% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Enga Ooru Kavalkaran; the 2000s to Seerivarum Kaalai. Ramarajan acted in every film; S. S. Chandran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Ramarajan was already a rising star when S. S. Chandran was cast as his sidekick in Marudhani (1985). Chandran had mostly done comedy roles in supporting parts, but Ramarajan personally asked the director to give him more screen time. That film became their first hit together.
  • In Ennai Vittu Pogaathe (1988), Chandran’s comic timing forced Ramarajan to slow down his usual rapid-fire dialogue delivery. Ramarajan later admitted in an interview that Chandran’s pauses made him rethink his own rhythm — and that film became a template for their later comedies.
  • Their 1988 film Rasave Unnai Nambi was the first Tamil movie to feature a full-length comedy track between a hero and his sidekick that ran parallel to the main plot. That structure — hero’s romance + sidekick’s comic subplot — was later copied by dozens of 90s masala films.
  • On the sets of Melangottu Thalikattu (1988), Chandran would cook biryani for the entire crew every Sunday. Ramarajan always sat next to him and helped chop vegetables. The unit called them 'the biryani brothers' — a nickname that stuck for years.
  • Ramarajan once said about Chandran: 'He was the only actor who could make me laugh so hard I forgot my lines. We had to reshoot half of Pongi Varum Kaveri because I kept breaking character.'
  • After Seerivarum Kaalai (2001), they never worked together again. But Ramarajan quietly paid for Chandran’s medical bills when the latter fell ill in 2005 — no one knew until Chandran’s son mentioned it in a 2018 interview.
