• Their first film together, Enakkul Oruvan (1984), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a different actor for Charlie's role, but Sathyaraj insisted on Charlie after seeing him in a stage play. He told the director, 'If he's not in it, I'm out.'
• In Puthiya Vaanam (1988), Sathyaraj played the intense lead while Charlie handled all the comic relief. But here's the trick: Charlie would deliberately flub his lines during rehearsals to make Sathyaraj laugh, loosening him up before the actual take. Sathyaraj later said Charlie's chaos made him a better actor.
• Their 1990 film Ulagam Piranthathu Enakkaga was a massive flop, but it accidentally launched a trend. The film's villain, played by a then-unknown actor named Raghuvaran, got so much attention that directors started casting him as the primary antagonist in major films. Both Sathyaraj and Charlie later joked they 'discovered' him.
• Despite making 8 films together, they never once had a meal together off-set. Charlie was a strict vegetarian and Sathyaraj was a hardcore non-veg lover. They'd finish a scene and immediately go to separate canteens. But they'd always call each other after the meal to discuss the next day's shoot.
• Charlie once said in a 2005 interview: 'Sathyaraj and I never needed a director. We'd just look at each other and know who was going to speak next. It was like a tennis match — he'd serve, I'd return, and the audience would watch the rally.'
• In Airport (1993), their worst-rated film together, they improvised an entire 8-minute scene after the director fell asleep on set. Sathyaraj started ranting about airport food, and Charlie responded by pretending to be a security guard who kept asking for his boarding pass. The crew used the footage because it was the only usable take that day.
