• Director K. S. Gopalakrishnan cast Kovai Sarala and Reka together in 'Manaivi Oru Mandhiri' (1988) because he wanted two actresses who could switch between comedy and melodrama in the same scene — Sarala was already a known comedian, but Reka was still proving herself in Tamil. He paired them specifically to let Reka learn timing from Sarala on set.
• In 'Thangamana Purushan' (1989), Sarala would deliberately flub her lines during rehearsals to make Reka laugh and break her tension — Reka later said this was Sarala's way of teaching her to stay loose in front of the camera. The scene where they both burst out laughing at a sari shop was unscripted, born from that habit.
• During the shoot of 'En Kadhal Kanmani' (1990), Sarala and Reka shared a room in a lodge in Tenkasi for three weeks. Reka cooked sambar rice every night because Sarala hated the hotel food. They never worked together again after that film, but Reka still calls Sarala 'akka' at industry events.
• Reka said in a 2019 interview: 'Sarala akka would pull my cheek before every take and say, "Nee comedy panna mudiyum, just relax." I was scared of comedy until she showed me it's just timing, not acting.'
