• Muthuraman cast Sarala in 'Japanil Kalyanaraman' (1985) after seeing her comic timing in a stage play. He later said he needed someone who could match Kamal Haasan's energy without being intimidated — and she was the only one who didn't freeze.
• In 'Uyarndha Ullam' (1985), Muthuraman deliberately gave Sarala no written dialogues for a key comedy scene. He told her to react to Kamal's lines in real time. That raw, unscripted back-and-forth became the scene Tamil audiences still quote.
• Muthuraman personally drove Sarala to the hospital when she fell ill during the 'Per Sollum Pillai' (1987) shoot. She later said he treated her like a daughter — and never once shouted at her on set, which was rare for a director in the 80s.
