The Thambi Ramaiah & Samuthirakani partnership
2015 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 12 years, a Thambi–Samuthirakani film arrived almost every year. From Saattai (2012) to Rajakili (2024).
Their most recent film, Rajakili, came out in 2024 — the partnership is still active. Saattai is the one most viewers reach for.
The shape of the work
The 2010s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 2010s belonged to Saattai; the 2020s to Thiru.Manickam. Samuthirakani actor in some, director in others. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Thambi Ramaiah was the one who pushed Samuthirakani to direct 'Saattai' (2012). Kanik had the script but was hesitant to direct. Ramaiah read it, told him 'you have to direct this yourself', and even agreed to act in it to give the project weight. That film became their first collaboration and put both of them on the map as a director-actor pair.
- In 'Nimirndhu Nil' (2014), Samuthirakani deliberately gave Thambi Ramaiah long, uninterrupted monologues. Kanik knew Ramaiah could hold the frame alone with his voice and timing. The scene where Ramaiah's character lectures the hero about discipline — that's a single take. No cuts. Kanik told the cameraman to just roll and let Ramaiah breathe.
- Their film 'Appa' (2016) directly inspired the trend of father-son emotional dramas in Tamil cinema that followed. After 'Appa', at least three other Tamil films with similar themes were announced within a year. One of them, 'Pariyerum Perumal' (2018), had its director Mari Selvaraj cite 'Appa' as a reference for how to handle caste and family tension without melodrama.
- On the sets of 'Thondan' (2017), Thambi Ramaiah and Samuthirakani had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the entire crew tea. Ramaiah lost the first day. Kanik lost the second. By the end of the shoot, the crew had free tea for two weeks straight.
- Samuthirakani once said about Thambi Ramaiah: 'He is the only actor who can make me cry and laugh in the same scene. When he acts, I forget I am the director. I just become a fan watching him.' He said this during the audio launch of 'Maniyaar Kudumbam' (2018).
- In 'Adutha Sattai' (2019), Samuthirakani wrote the role of the strict father specifically for Thambi Ramaiah after watching him improvise a similar character in 'Bhogi' (2017). Kanik told Ramaiah: 'Just do what you did in Bhogi, but make it angrier.' Ramaiah took that note and added a stammer to the dialogue delivery — something Kanik hadn't written. It became the character's signature.
