• Suruli Rajan was a popular comedian in the 1970s, but Rajinikanth was still a rising star when they first paired up in 'Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram' (1977). The director, SP Muthuraman, deliberately cast them together because he saw that Rajini's intense style needed a comic foil who could match his energy without being overshadowed.
• In 'Murattu Kaalai' (1980), Suruli Rajan's character was the village jester who constantly teased Rajini's macho hero. Rajini later admitted that Suruli's improvisations on set forced him to loosen up and add more playful beats to his own performance — the scene where Suruli mimics Rajini's walk became a fan favourite.
• Their 10-film run from 1977 to 1980 directly launched the 'mass hero with a comic sidekick' template in Tamil cinema. Every major star after them — from Vijay to Ajith — copied this formula, but it was Rajini and Suruli who perfected it first in 'Johnny' (1980).
• Suruli Rajan was a heavy smoker and often delayed shoots. Rajini, who was already health-conscious, would personally confiscate his cigarettes before every scene. Suruli once joked, 'He treated me like a schoolboy, but I never argued because he was the only one who could make me laugh between takes.'
• Rajinikanth said in a 2014 interview: 'Suruli Rajan was my lucky charm. Every time we worked together, the film was a hit. I never had to worry about comedy when he was around — he just took over and made me look good.'
• In 'En Kelvikku Enna Bathil' (1978), Suruli Rajan played a bumbling sidekick who accidentally ruins Rajini's romantic plans. The director revealed that Suruli would deliberately flub his lines to make Rajini break character and laugh — and those genuine reactions were kept in the final cut.
