The Sriman & Livingston partnership

After 16 years apart, they came back together for Naai Sekar (2022). They didn't share a set between 2006 and 2022. From Vallarasu (2000) to Naai Sekar (2022).

It started with Vallarasu (2000).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Nenjirukkum Varai; the 2020s to Naai Sekar. Sriman acted in every film; Livingston acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Sriman was the one who pushed for Livingston to direct him in 'Virumbugiren' (2002). Livingston had only directed one film before, but Sriman saw his script and insisted. That film became their biggest critical hit together.
  • Livingston wrote the role in 'Ramachandra' (2003) specifically around Sriman's ability to switch between comedy and emotion in the same scene. He told Sriman: 'Don't act — just react to what the other actor gives you.' That became their working rule.
  • After 'Nenjirukkum Varai' (2006), they didn't speak for nearly 15 years. A misunderstanding over a missed call and a delayed payment caused the rift. They only patched up in 2021 when a mutual friend forced them into the same room for 'Naai Sekar'.
  • Livingston once said in an interview: 'Sriman is the only actor who would call me at 2 AM to discuss a single line of dialogue. Annoying, but that's why our films have soul.'
  • Their film 'Asokavanam' (2001) was the first Tamil film to use a live snake in a comedy sequence without CGI. The snake handler quit on set, so Sriman had to hold the snake himself while Livingston directed from behind a glass shield.
  • In 'Nenjirukkum Varai' (2006), Livingston deliberately shot Sriman's emotional breakdown scene in one continuous take. Sriman had to hit his mark while crying, and Livingston didn't cut until Sriman physically collapsed. That scene is still shared on Tamil fan pages.
