Partnership facts

• Basu Chatterjee cast Utpal Dutt in 'Shaukeen' (1982) after seeing him play a lecherous old man on stage. Dutt initially refused, saying the role was too vulgar. Chatterjee convinced him by rewriting the part to add a layer of comic desperation.
• On the set of 'Pasand Apni Apni' (1983), Chatterjee would let Dutt improvise his monologues. Dutt once delivered a 4-minute rant about inflation that wasn't in the script. Chatterjee kept it in the final cut because the crew couldn't stop laughing.
• Chatterjee and Dutt shared a ritual before every shoot: they'd argue for 10 minutes about Bengali cinema vs. Hindi cinema. Dutt called it 'warming up the brain.' Chatterjee said it was the only way to get Dutt to stop being 'too theatrical' for the camera.
• Utpal Dutt once said about Basu Chatterjee: 'He made me act with my eyes, not my voice. For a stage actor, that is like learning to walk again.'
• The failure of 'Kirayadar' (1986) — their last film together — was so bitter that Chatterjee never cast Dutt again. Dutt later told a friend that Chatterjee 'blamed the script, but I think he blamed me.' They never spoke after the release.
