The Vivek & Venniradai Moorthy partnership

For 14 years, a Vivek–Venniradai film arrived almost every year. From Nanbargal (1991) to Vanakkam Thalaiva (2005). The spanned closed with Vanakkam Thalaiva in 2005.

It started with Nanbargal (1991).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 71% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Kalikaalam; the 2000s to Nageswari. Vivek acted in every film; Venniradai Moorthy acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Vivek was a struggling mimicry artist when Venniradai Moorthy spotted him at a stage show in the late 80s. Moorthy insisted the director of Nanbargal (1991) cast Vivek as the comedian — that film became Vivek's first proper break in Tamil cinema.
  • Moorthy played the straight man to Vivek's rapid-fire one-liners. In Enga Muthalali (1993), Vivek would riff for minutes while Moorthy just stood there with a deadpan face — that contrast made the comedy land harder. Moorthy never tried to match Vivek's speed; he let Vivek run and caught the punchline.
  • On the sets of Kaalamellam Kadhal Vaazhga (1997), Vivek and Moorthy shared a room in a cheap lodge near the shooting spot. Moorthy would wake up at 4 AM to rehearse his lines aloud, and Vivek would groan and throw a pillow at him. They argued about the volume every single day.
  • Their double-act in Pass Mark (1993) was so popular that the director wrote a separate comedy track for them in the second half — a subplot that had nothing to do with the main story. That track later inspired a whole wave of 'comedian side-plot' films in mid-90s Tamil cinema.
  • Vivek once said in a 2004 interview: 'Moorthy sir is the only actor who can make me laugh even when I'm angry. He'd mess up a line, and I'd forget my anger and start laughing. We ruined many takes that way.'
  • In Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999), Moorthy improvised a scene where he pretended to be a deaf old man, and Vivek had to shout every line. Vivek's voice actually went hoarse after three takes — but Moorthy kept changing his 'deaf' reactions to make Vivek crack up. The final take is the one where Vivek is barely holding in laughter.
