Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in Meenda Sorgam (1960), but the real spark came when director A. Bhimsingh cast them together in Pasamalar (1961). That film was a massive hit and cemented them as a go-to pair for family dramas.
• In Pasamalar (1961), Gemini Ganesan played the emotional, romantic lead while Thangavelu provided the comic relief. But Thangavelu’s timing was so sharp that Gemini often said he had to work harder to keep up — Thangavelu’s one-liners would steal the scene.
• Their pairing in Then Nilavu (1961) helped launch the career of actress K. R. Vijaya, who played Gemini’s love interest. Thangavelu’s comic track with her in that film became a template for many later Tamil comedies.
• Off-screen, Gemini Ganesan and Thangavelu were close friends. They often traveled together to shoots in the same car, and Thangavelu would crack jokes to keep Gemini’s spirits up during his personal struggles in the 1960s.
