• For Parthiban Kanavu (1960), director A. P. Nagarajan wanted a younger, more romantic hero for the lead. Gemini Ganesan was already a star, but Nagarajan paired him with S. V. Ranga Rao — then known mostly for villain roles — as the aging king. Ranga Rao was hesitant, but Gemini personally convinced him to take the part, saying the role would redefine his career.
• In Kappalottiya Thamizhan (1961), Gemini played the fiery freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, while Ranga Rao played the British-appointed judge. Their courtroom face-off was entirely improvised — Gemini would raise his voice, and Ranga Rao would counter with a cold, measured silence. The scene became a template for Tamil courtroom dramas for the next decade.
• On the sets of Bandha Pasam (1962), Gemini and Ranga Rao had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the entire crew lunch. Ranga Rao, a stickler for lines, never lost once. Gemini later joked that he deliberately lost just to keep the crew fed.
• Kula Vilakku (1969) was the last film they made together. It directly inspired director K. Balachander to cast both actors in his own film — but Balachander ended up using only Ranga Rao, because Gemini's health was already declining. That film was Thillu Mullu (1981), which became a cult comedy classic.
• S. V. Ranga Rao once said in an interview: 'Gemini made acting look like breathing. I had to work twice as hard just to keep up with him. But he never made me feel like I was behind.'
