• They first paired in 1960's 'Thanga Rathinam' because the producer needed a fresh young couple to match the film's modern love story. Neither was a big star yet — the film put both on the map overnight.
• Rajendran was the calm, measured actor on set — he'd rehearse his lines softly. Vijayakumari brought raw energy and would often improvise a sudden laugh or tear. Directors said she made him loosen up, and he made her hold the frame longer.
• Their 1963 hit 'Kungumam' directly inspired a wave of Tamil films about village honor and family secrets. At least five copycat films with similar titles and themes came out in the next two years.
• They never dated or married, but they had a standing ritual: before every first shot of a new film, they'd share a single cup of filter coffee from the same tumbler. They kept this up for all 24 films.
• Vijayakumari once told a magazine: 'With Rajendran, I never felt like I was acting. He would just look at me, and I knew exactly what my character was feeling.'
• In 'Poompuhar' (1964), they shot a 7-minute single-take argument scene. Rajendran insisted on doing it without cuts because he wanted the anger to build naturally. Vijayakumari matched his intensity beat for beat — the scene is still studied in Tamil film schools.
