• Director M. A. Thirumugam paired them for the first time in 'Nam Naadu' (1969) because he needed a villain who could match Sivaji Ganesan's intensity. He cast Thengai Srinivasan as the comic sidekick and R. S. Manohar as the heavy. They never shared a single scene together in that film — their first 'collaboration' was actually two separate tracks.
• In 'CID Shankar' (1970), Thengai Srinivasan improvised a line where he calls Manohar's character 'periya aalu' (big shot) while trembling. Manohar, known for his booming voice, deliberately lowered his volume in response — making Thengai's fear look more real. That back-and-forth became their signature: one overacts the fear, the other underplays the menace.
• Their only film together that became a cult hit is 'Thanikattu Raja' (1982). It directly inspired the 1990s trend of pairing a stammering comic sidekick with a stone-faced villain in Tamil B-movies. Directors like R. K. Selvamani have cited this film as the template for their villain-comic duos.
• Thengai Srinivasan and R. S. Manohar were neighbors in Chennai's Mylapore for over a decade. Every morning before a shoot, Thengai would walk to Manohar's house and they'd share a cup of coffee — even on days they weren't filming together. Manohar's wife once said they argued more about coffee temperature than about acting.
• Thengai Srinivasan once told a magazine: 'Manohar would finish his dialogue and then look at me. That look was my cue. He never told me what to do. He just gave me the space to be funny. That's why it worked.'
• In 'Sarithira Nayagan' (1984), they shot a scene where Manohar's character slaps Thengai's. Manohar actually pulled his hand at the last second — but Thengai insisted he take the real slap for authenticity. Manohar refused. The final take shows Thengai flinching before the slap lands, because he didn't know if Manohar would actually hit him. That flinch is real.
