• Savitri was already a huge star when she agreed to play mother to a child actor in Kalathur Kannamma (1960). The director, A. Bhimsingh, had to convince her that playing a mother wouldn't hurt her romantic image. She took the leap, and the film became a massive hit — launching the Bhim Singh-Savitri pair.
• In Pasamalar (1961), Bhim Singh deliberately shot Savitri's emotional breakdown scenes in long, unbroken takes. He knew she could sustain grief without cutting away. The result? The scene where she learns her brother is dead is still taught in acting schools.
• Because of Pasamalar's insane success, Bhim Singh and Savitri churned out four more films in just two years. That run directly inspired MGR to cast Savitri in his own family dramas — she became the go-to 'weepy' heroine of the early 60s.
• Off-screen, Savitri called Bhim Singh 'Anna' (elder brother). He was one of the few directors she trusted enough to take career advice from. When her personal life got messy later, he quietly stopped casting her — not out of spite, but to protect her from public scrutiny.
• Savitri once told a magazine: 'Bhim Singh doesn't direct me. He just sets the camera and lets me cry. He knows I'll do it better than any instruction he can give.'
