The Raja & S. S. Chandran partnership

Between 1988 and 1991, they barely worked apart — 5 films in 3 years. From Idhu Engal Needhi (1988) to Vaa Arugil Vaa (1991). The spanned closed with Vaa Arugil Vaa in 1991.

It started with Idhu Engal Needhi (1988).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Idhu Engal Needhi; the 1990s to Vaa Arugil Vaa. Raja acted in every film; S. S. Chandran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Raja and S. S. Chandran first teamed up for Idhu Engal Needhi (1988) because the producer needed a quick replacement after the original lead walked out. Chandran, who was already cast as the villain, recommended Raja to the director — and they shot the entire film in 18 days.
  • In Kalicharan (1988), Chandran deliberately played his villain role with a slow, theatrical menace to make Raja's frantic hero look even more desperate. Raja later said Chandran's pacing forced him to raise his own energy — the film is a mess, but their scenes together have a weird, sweaty tension.
  • During the shoot of Mappillai (1989), Raja and Chandran shared a room in a small lodge near the set. Chandran would wake up at 4 AM to rehearse his lines aloud, which drove Raja crazy — but Raja never complained because Chandran was the one who got him the film.
  • Pudhu Varisu (1990) was the only film where Chandran played a positive role opposite Raja — a rare soft-spoken father figure. That performance directly led to Chandran being cast in a similar paternal role in a TV serial two years later, which became his most recognized work outside cinema.
  • Raja once told a magazine: 'Chandran sir would finish his shot and then stand behind the camera, mouthing my dialogues along with me. He wanted me to look good. That's why I did five films with him — he was the only co-star who cared about my performance as much as his own.'
  • After Vaa Arugil Vaa (1991) flopped, Chandran called Raja and said they should stop working together — not because of bad blood, but because he felt their pairing was 'unlucky' for both. They never spoke again. Raja found out about Chandran's death from a newspaper in 2008.
