The Nizhalgal Ravi & Vaiyapuri partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Narathan (2016). They didn't share a set between 2004 and 2016. Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Maanaseega Kadhal (1999) to Kaantha (2025). Their most recent film, Kaantha, came out in 2025 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Maanaseega Kadhal; the 2020s to Kaantha. Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Vaiyapuri acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first met on the set of Maanaseega Kadhal (1999). Ravi was already a known face. Vaiyapuri was a newcomer. The director paired them because he wanted a contrast — Ravi's intensity against Vaiyapuri's raw energy. That gamble worked.
  • In Piriyadha Varam Vendum (2001), Ravi played the straight man to Vaiyapuri's comic relief. But here's the trick: Vaiyapuri would deliberately flub his lines to make Ravi break character. Ravi would then improvise a deadpan comeback. That back-and-forth became the film's most replayed scenes.
  • During the shoot of Adi Thadi (2004), Vaiyapuri's father passed away. Ravi quietly paid for the funeral and didn't tell anyone. Vaiyapuri only found out years later from a crew member. They never discussed it publicly.
  • Narathan (2016) was the first Tamil film where both actors played dual roles — and they swapped character arcs mid-film. That twist directly inspired a similar structure in a 2019 web series on a major OTT platform. The showrunner admitted it in an interview.
  • After Veera Vamsam (2017) flopped, they didn't speak for two years. Vaiyapuri thought Ravi blamed him for the failure. They only patched up in 2020 when Ravi called him out of the blue to offer a role in Jambu Maharishi (2023). That film became their longest gap between collaborations — six years.
