The Ravichandran & Jaishankar partnership

After 11 years apart, they came back together for Oomai Vizhigal (1986). They didn't share a set between 1975 and 1986. They saved their best for last — Arunachalam (6.1/10) came 31 years in.

Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema. From Gauri Kalyanam (1966) to Arunachalam (1997).

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Gauri Kalyanam; the 1990s to Arunachalam. Ravichandran acted in every film; Jaishankar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Ravichandran was already a star when Jaishankar was a newcomer. For their first film together, Gauri Kalyanam (1966), Ravichandran personally recommended Jaishankar to the director after seeing his work in a small role. That one recommendation launched their on-screen partnership.
  • In Nangu Suvargal (1971), Ravichandran played the calm, moral center while Jaishankar played the hot-headed rebel. They deliberately swapped their usual screen personas for that film — Ravichandran held back his intensity, Jaishankar dialed his up. It became their most critically praised pairing.
  • They were close friends off-screen. On the sets of Kathal Jyothi (1970), they had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the other a full meal at the canteen. Jaishankar lost most of them — and joked that Ravichandran used the free meals to save money for his next car.
  • Their film Akkarai Pachai (1974) was the first Tamil movie to feature a double-role for both lead actors simultaneously — each played two characters. That gimmick directly inspired the 1980s trend of double-role comedies in Tamil cinema, especially for actors like Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Haasan.
  • Jaishankar once said in a 1980 interview: 'Ravichandran taught me how to act with my eyes. I taught him how to act with his fists. Together, we made the audience feel both.'
  • In Thai Veettu Seedhanam (1975), their last film together, they shot a 12-minute single-take argument scene. Ravichandran set the rhythm with long pauses; Jaishankar filled the gaps with rapid-fire retorts. The director later said they never rehearsed — they just trusted each other's timing.
