The Venniradai Moorthy & Vijayakumar partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Thunive Thunai (1976) to Sangamam (1999). Sangamam (1999, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram is the one most viewers reach for. The unfolded closed with Sangamam in 1999.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram; the 1990s to Pangali. Venniradai Moorthy acted in every film; Vijayakumar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Venniradai Moorthy was a theatre veteran when he met Vijayakumar on the set of Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram (1977). Vijayakumar, already a star, insisted Moorthy play the key role of the blind father — even though the director had someone else in mind. Moorthy later said that one film changed his entire screen career.
  • In Raja Rishi (1985), Moorthy played a sage and Vijayakumar played a king. The entire emotional weight of the film rested on their face-off scenes. Moorthy set a slow, meditative pace; Vijayakumar matched it beat for beat, never rushing his lines. That restraint is why the climax still works.
  • On the sets of Pangali (1992), the two would share a single cup of filter coffee between takes — a ritual they kept for every film after that. No one else was allowed to touch that cup.
  • Mr. Romeo (1996) was a disaster, but it accidentally created one of Tamil cinema's most enduring comedy duos: the film's supporting cast included a young Vadivelu, who later credited Moorthy and Vijayakumar's on-set banter for teaching him comic timing.
  • Vijayakumar once told a magazine: 'Moorthy sir doesn't act — he becomes the character. I had to work twice as hard just to keep up with him in Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram.'
