The Nassar & Arjun partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Kolaigaran (2019). They saved their best for last — Kolaigaran (6.9/10) came 27 years in. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

They didn't share a set between 2010 and 2019. From Sevagan (1992) to Kolaigaran (2019).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Kuruthipunal; the 2010s to Kolaigaran. Nassar acted in every film; Arjun acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Sevagan (1992), almost didn't happen. Director RK Selvamani cast Arjun as the lead, but Nassar was a last-minute replacement after the original villain dropped out. Arjun personally vouched for Nassar to the producer, saying he'd seen his stage work and knew he'd bring the right menace.
  • In Kuruthipunal (1995), Arjun played the righteous cop and Nassar the cold-blooded terrorist. The tension in their scenes came from a real-life dynamic: Arjun would rehearse his lines at full volume, while Nassar stayed silent and barely moved. That stillness made Arjun's rage look even more desperate on screen.
  • Their 2004 film Arasatchi was the first Tamil movie to use a live tiger in a fight scene. The tiger was borrowed from a circus, and both actors insisted on doing the scene without a double. The sequence became a talking point across Tamil Nadu and directly inspired the tiger fight in the 2008 film Singam.
  • On the sets of Marudhamalai (2007), Nassar and Arjun had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the entire crew biryani. Arjun lost on day one. Nassar lost on day three. By the end of the shoot, they'd bought biryani for the crew seven times.
  • Arjun once said in a 2019 interview: 'Nassar is the only actor who can make me forget my lines. When he looks at me with those eyes, I stop acting. I just react.' He was talking about their final scene together in Kolaigaran (2019).
  • In Kolaigaran (2019), their last film together, the director deliberately shot their confrontation scene in one continuous take. Arjun kept escalating his volume, but Nassar dropped his voice to a whisper. The sound mixer had to ride the levels live — that whisper is what made the scene a hit.
