The Nassar & Vikram partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Dhill (2001). Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They didn't share a set between 1993 and 2001.

From Meera (1992) to Iru Mugan (2016). Deiva Thirumagal (2011, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Amaravathi; the 2010s to Deiva Thirumagal. Nassar acted in every film; Vikram acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • For Anniyan (2005), director Shankar originally wanted a different actor for the role of the psychiatrist. Nassar, who played the cop, personally recommended Vikram to Shankar after seeing his intensity in Sethu. That recommendation locked the pairing.
  • In Anniyan, Nassar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in their interrogation scene to force Vikram to match his rhythm. Vikram later said that pause made him dig deeper into the character's panic — the scene became the film's most tense moment.
  • During Iru Mugan (2016), Vikram was recovering from a shoulder injury and couldn't do heavy stunts. Nassar quietly adjusted his own fight choreography to take more hits on screen, making Vikram's character look stronger without anyone asking him to.
  • Vikram once said in an interview: 'Nassar sir doesn't act with you — he listens to you. That's rare. In Anniyan, I felt like I was acting opposite a wall that was alive.'
  • The success of their face-off in Anniyan directly inspired director Bejoy Nambiar to cast both of them in his Hindi film David (2013) — but as two different characters in separate timelines. They never shared a single scene in that film.
  • In Iru Mugan, Nassar played a scientist and Vikram played a double role. Nassar insisted on rehearsing each scene twice — once with each of Vikram's characters — so his reactions would be different for the hero and the villain. Vikram called it 'acting with two different partners.'
