Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Ponnana Vazhvu (1967), almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam originally wanted M. G. Ramachandran for the lead. Sivaji Ganesan stepped in and suggested Jaishankar instead, giving the younger actor his first major break opposite a legend.
• On the sets of Anbalippu (1969), Sivaji would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery in emotional scenes so Jaishankar could match his rhythm. Jaishankar later admitted this made him a more patient actor — he learned to hold a pause instead of rushing through lines.
• After Uruvangal Maralam (1983) wrapped, Sivaji gifted Jaishankar a gold ring with both their initials engraved. Jaishankar wore it in every film they made together after that — including Thiruppam and Vazhkai. You can spot it in close-up shots if you look closely.
• Their 1984 film Sarithira Nayagan directly inspired director K. S. Ravikumar to cast both actors together again in Bandham (1985). Ravikumar was an assistant director on Sarithira Nayagan and later said watching them trade screen time taught him how to balance two male leads without one overshadowing the other.
• Jaishankar once told a magazine: 'Sivaji sir never treated me like a junior artist. He would ask my opinion on a scene and actually wait for my answer. That respect made me give him my best every single time.'
• In Marumagal (1986), their last film together, Sivaji insisted on shooting a key confrontation scene in one continuous take — no cuts. Jaishankar had to match his intensity without any editing safety net. The scene runs 4 minutes and 20 seconds. They nailed it on the first take.
