• They first shared screen in Mugoortha Naal (1967) because the director wanted a fresh pair for a wedding comedy. Vijayakumar was a newcomer, Jaishankar was already a star — but Jaishankar agreed to do the film only if Vijayakumar was cast opposite him.
• In Mayor Meenakshi (1976), Jaishankar played the loud, impulsive mayor while Vijayakumar played the calm, calculating rival. The tension worked because Jaishankar set the pace with his bombast, and Vijayakumar deliberately slowed his reactions — making every silence feel like a counter-punch.
• Apoorva Sahodarigal (1983) was the first Tamil film where both actors played double roles — and it directly inspired the trend of twin-swap comedies in the 80s. Director S. P. Muthuraman later said he cast them specifically because their contrasting body language made the four characters easy to tell apart.
• On the sets of Thudikkum Karangal (1983), Vijayakumar and Jaishankar had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy lunch for the entire crew. Jaishankar lost 11 times in a row — Vijayakumar later joked that Jaishankar deliberately lost because he liked feeding the unit.
• Jaishankar once told a magazine: 'Vijayakumar is the only co-star who made me work harder. If I didn't bring my A-game, he'd steal the scene without raising his voice.'
