Manobala and Delhi Ganesh appeared together in 12 Tamil films between 1987 and 2016. Their highest-rated collaboration was Aethiree (2004 — 7.2/10). Films span Sirai Paravai (1987) through Virumandikum Sivanadikum (2016).
The Manobala & Delhi Ganesh partnership
Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema. After 8 years apart, they came back together for Gangai Karai Paattu (1995). They didn't share a set between 1987 and 1995.
From Sirai Paravai (1987) to Virumandikum Sivanadikum (2016). Aethiree is the one most viewers reach for.
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Sirai Paravai; the 2010s to Thamizh Padam. Manobala acted in every film; Delhi Ganesh acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Sirai Paravai (1987), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a different actor for Manobala's role. Delhi Ganesh personally vouched for him, telling the crew, 'He will steal the scene without saying a word.' That trust got Manobala the part.
- In Gangai Karai Paattu (1995), Manobala played the comic sidekick while Delhi Ganesh played the stern father. Their trick: Manobala would deliberately flub his lines to make Delhi Ganesh laugh, and the director kept those takes because the natural irritation on Delhi Ganesh's face made the father role feel real.
- Their 2010 film Kutti Pisasu launched a minor trend in Tamil horror-comedy. The film's success directly inspired a wave of low-budget 'friendly ghost' movies in the early 2010s, including the 2012 hit Yaamirukka Bayamey, which borrowed the same tone of a bumbling ghost paired with a scared family man.
- On the sets of Thalai Nagaram (2006), the two shared a room during the entire shoot in Theni. Every night, they would rehearse the next day's scenes by acting them out in reverse order — a weird ritual Delhi Ganesh picked up from his theatre days. Manobala later said it helped him remember his lines better than any other co-star.
- Delhi Ganesh once said about Manobala: 'He is the only actor who can make me forget I am acting. When we did Virumandikum Sivanadikum, I actually thought he was my real son for a moment.' He said this in a 2016 interview with a Tamil weekly.
- In Puthagam (2013), they played a father-son duo with a twist: the son (Manobala) was the smarter one, and the father (Delhi Ganesh) was the comic relief. Manobala deliberately slowed his delivery to let Delhi Ganesh's punchlines land harder. The director later said that without that rhythm swap, the film's emotional climax would have fallen flat.
