The Kamal Haasan & S. P. Muthuraman partnership

From Mogam Muppadhu Varusham (1976) to Per Sollum Pillai (1987). For 11 years, a Kamal–S. film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Enakkul Oruvan (8.5) at one end, Uyarndha Ullam (3.6) at the other.

The unfolded closed with Per Sollum Pillai in 1987. Enakkul Oruvan is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Aadu Puli Attam; the 1980s to Enakkul Oruvan. Kamal Haasan acted in every film; S. P. Muthuraman directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Muthuraman first spotted Kamal in a small role and decided to cast him as the lead in 'Mogam Muppadhu Varusham' (1976) — but the producer was hesitant because Kamal was still a supporting actor. Muthuraman fought for him, and that film became their first hit together.
  • Muthuraman gave Kamal complete freedom to rewrite dialogues and improvise on set. Kamal would often show up with a rewritten scene in the morning, and Muthuraman would just nod and say 'shoot it.' That trust is why 'Sakalakala Vallavan' (1982) feels so loose and playful.
  • Their 1983 comedy 'Thoongadhe Thambi Thoongadhe' directly inspired the 1990s Tamil comedy template — double roles, mistaken identities, and a hero who can't sleep. Later directors like K. S. Ravikumar have cited this film as the blueprint for their own masala comedies.
  • Muthuraman and Kamal had a standing ritual: after every film's first-day-first-show, they'd sit alone in the director's office and eat biryani from the same plate, discussing what worked and what didn't. They did this for all 11 films, even the flops.
  • Kamal once said: 'Muthuraman sir never told me how to act. He just created a space where I could try anything. If I fell, he'd catch me. If I flew, he'd let me keep flying.'
  • On 'Enakkul Oruvan' (1984), Muthuraman deliberately shot Kamal's dual role scenes in a single take with no cuts — forcing Kamal to switch between characters in real time. Kamal later said that challenge taught him how to 'become' a character without relying on editing.
