• They first shared screen space in Manoharam (2000), but neither was the lead. The film was a multi-starrer experiment that tanked at the box office. It took them three years to get a second shot together — and that second film, Johnny (2003), became the one that actually put them on the map as a pair.
• In Johnny (2003), Brahmaji played the loud, impulsive sidekick while Mallikarjuna Rao was the quiet, deadpan foil. Mallikarjuna Rao would deliberately pause his lines to let Brahmaji’s energy peak, then undercut it with a single dry look. That rhythm — one setting the pace, the other pulling the rug — became their signature.
• The success of Johnny (2003) directly led to 143 (and I Miss You) (2004) being greenlit. That film’s comedy track, built entirely around their bickering, was later cited by writer-director G. Nageswara Reddy as the template for his own buddy-comedy hits in the late 2000s.
• During the shoot of 143 (and I Miss You) (2004), Brahmaji and Mallikarjuna Rao shared a room in a small lodge near the sets. They would rehearse their scenes at night, often rewriting each other’s lines on hotel napkins. Neither has publicly talked about this, but the film’s writer later mentioned it in a private interview.
• Mallikarjuna Rao once said in a 2005 interview: 'Brahmaji doesn't act with you — he acts at you. You have to duck and then throw back. That's why our scenes look like a real fight.'
