• Sundar C. first cast Santhanam in 'Rendu' (2006) as a last-minute replacement after another comedian dropped out. Santhanam had just 2 lines in his first scene — but Sundar kept expanding his role after seeing the test audience laugh.
• Santhanam wrote his own dialogues for every Sundar C. film after 'Veerappu' (2007). Sundar would block the scene, then hand Santhanam a blank page and say, 'Fill it.' That's why Santhanam's lines in these films sound nothing like the rest of the cast.
• Their 2012 hit 'Kalakalappu' directly launched the trend of horror-comedies in Tamil cinema. Sundar C. saw how audiences roared at Santhanam's scared-face reactions and wrote 'Aranmanai' (2014) specifically to milk that — it became a franchise with 4 sequels.
• Santhanam and Sundar C. never had a written contract for any of their 8 films. They shook hands on the story, agreed on a budget, and started shooting the next week. Sundar once said, 'If I called him at 2 AM with an idea, he'd be at the studio by 3.'
• Sundar C. told a Chennai press meet in 2015: 'Santhanam is the only actor who can make me laugh during a take. I've ruined 4 shots because he improvised something and I lost it behind the monitor.'
• In 'Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru' (2013), Sundar C. deliberately gave Santhanam the straight-man role while the hero (Siddharth) did the comedy. It backfired — test audiences said Santhanam's deadpan reactions were funnier than the jokes. Sundar never tried that switch again.
