The Venniradai Moorthy & Vijayakanth partnership
After 8 years apart, they came back together for Viswanathan Ramamoorthy (2001). Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They didn't share a set between 1993 and 2001.
From Sivappu Malli (1981) to Viswanathan Ramamoorthy (2001). The work is uneven: En Kitta Mothathey (7.5) at one end, Enga Muthalali (2.5) at the other.
The shape of the work
The 1980s account for 70% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Sivappu Malli; the 2000s to Viswanathan Ramamoorthy. Venniradai Moorthy acted in every film; Vijayakanth acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Vijayakanth was still a newcomer when director M. A. Kaja cast him opposite Venniradai Moorthy in Sivappu Malli (1981). Moorthy, already a veteran character actor, reportedly insisted on a screen test before agreeing to work with the rookie — and only said yes after Vijayakanth nailed a single-take emotional scene.
- In En Kitta Mothathey (1990), Moorthy played the comic sidekick who constantly outsmarts Vijayakanth's hero. The trick was that Moorthy would deliberately flub his lines during rehearsals, making Vijayakanth laugh on set — and the director kept those genuine reactions in the final cut.
- Their 1984 film Kudumbam was the first Tamil movie to feature a then-unknown comedian named Goundamani in a supporting role. Moorthy recommended him to the director after a stage play, and Goundamani's performance here led directly to his breakthrough in the industry.
- On the sets of Raman Sriraman (1985), Moorthy discovered that Vijayakanth couldn't swim. For a river-crossing scene, Moorthy secretly taught him basic strokes between takes — and never told the director, who thought Vijayakanth was just a natural.
- Vijayakanth once said in a 1995 interview: 'Moorthy sir was the only actor who could make me forget my lines. I'd be in the middle of a serious dialogue, he'd raise one eyebrow, and I'd lose it. We had to shoot En Kitta Mothathey in two shifts because of that.'
