Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Iru Medhaigal (1984), was a low-budget drama where both were relative newcomers. Moorthy was a stage actor making his film debut, and Janagaraj was still finding his footing as a comedian. The director paired them specifically because both had a natural, unpolished energy — no one else would take the roles.
• In Jallikattu (1987), Moorthy played the straight-laced hero while Janagaraj was the comic sidekick. But Janagaraj kept improvising lines on set, and Moorthy would deliberately pause mid-scene to let him land the joke — a rhythm they perfected over 11 films. Moorthy later said Janagaraj taught him how to 'listen with his face' in comedy scenes.
• Their 1990 film Idhaya Thamarai was the first Tamil movie to feature a then-unknown comedian named Vadivelu in a supporting role. Both Moorthy and Janagaraj vouched for him after seeing his stage act. Vadivelu went on to become one of Tamil cinema's biggest comedy stars.
• On the sets of En Purushan Than Enakku Mattundhan (1989), Moorthy and Janagaraj shared a room in a cheap lodge near the shooting spot. Every night, they would rehearse the next day's scenes together, often rewriting dialogues on hotel napkins. Janagaraj later said those nights were 'film school' for both of them.
• Janagaraj once said in a 1995 interview: 'Moorthy is the only actor who never complained when I changed his lines mid-shot. He trusted me like a brother. That's why we kept working together even when the films flopped.'
• In Gopala Gopala (1996), their worst-rated film together, Moorthy and Janagaraj played brothers-in-law. The director later admitted the script was a mess, but the two actors kept the shoot alive by inventing a running gag where they'd argue over who got to eat the last banana on set — and that bit made it into the final cut.
