Visu and Manivannan appeared together in 6 Tamil films between 1997 and 2008. Their highest-rated collaboration was Ji (2005 — 6.5/10). Films span Nesam (1997) through Ellam Avan Seyal (2008).
The Visu & Manivannan partnership
From Nesam (1997) to Ellam Avan Seyal (2008). It started with Nesam (1997).
The shape of the work
The 2000s account for 67% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Nesam; the 2000s to Ji. Visu acted in every film; Manivannan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Visu was already a veteran writer-director when he cast Manivannan in Nesam (1997). But Manivannan almost didn't take the role — he felt the character was too small. Visu convinced him by saying the role had the film's emotional core.
- On the sets of Sishya (1997), Visu would write dialogue in the morning and hand it to Manivannan, who would then rewrite his own lines in colloquial Tamil on the spot. Visu never objected — he said Manivannan's version always sounded more real.
- Visu and Manivannan shared a ritual before every shoot: they'd sit together and share a cup of filter coffee, discussing politics and old films. Manivannan later said those 15 minutes were his favourite part of the day.
- Cheena Thaana 001 (2007) was the only time Visu wrote a full-on spy comedy. Manivannan's deadpan delivery in that film directly inspired a younger writer-director, who later admitted he wrote a similar character in a 2012 hit because of this film.
- Manivannan once said in an interview: 'Visu sir gave me roles that had weight, not just comedy. He trusted me to carry the emotion. That's rare.'
