Partnership facts

• Jayalalitha was just 17 when she signed Kanni Thaai (1965) opposite K. A. Thangavelu, who was 30 years her senior. The director M. A. Thirumugam bet on this age gap working because Thangavelu’s fatherly screen presence would ground her youthful energy — and it did.
• In Sumathi En Sundari (1971), Thangavelu deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to match Jayalalitha’s rhythm. She later said he taught her how to pause for laughs — a trick she carried into her political speeches decades later.
• On the sets of Nam Naadu (1969), Thangavelu would bring Jayalalitha homemade snacks from his wife’s kitchen. She called him ‘Thangavelu uncle’ off-camera, and he insisted she call him that even during scenes — which is why their banter in that film feels unusually warm.
• Anbu Thangai (1974) was the first Tamil film to feature a female-led family drama where the brother (Thangavelu) is the comic relief, not the hero. This flipped the usual sibling dynamic and directly inspired the 1978 hit Aval Oru Thodar Kathai.
• Jayalalitha once told a magazine: “Thangavelu made me look good. He never stole a scene — he handed it to me.” She said this in a 1975 interview after Yarukkum Vetkammillai released.
• In Yarukkum Vetkammillai (1975), Thangavelu improvised a scene where he pretends to trip over a chair to cover for Jayalalitha’s forgotten line. The director kept the take — it’s the scene Tamil audiences still quote when they talk about their timing.
