The Amrish Puri & Shyam Benegal partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992). Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema. They didn't share a set between 1983 and 1992.

From Kalyug (1981) to Zubeidaa (2001). The work is uneven: Mandi (7.8) at one end, Sardari Begum (3.6) at the other.

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Mandi; the 2000s to Zubeidaa. Amrish Puri acted in every film; Shyam Benegal directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Shyam Benegal cast Amrish Puri in Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992) against type. Puri was famous for his booming villain roles. Benegal wanted him to play a quiet, melancholic horse trader. Puri was nervous he couldn't pull it off. Benegal told him, 'Just don't shout.'
  • On the set of Sardari Begum (1996), Benegal realized Puri couldn't sing the thumri his character was supposed to perform. Instead of dubbing, Benegal had Puri lip-sync to a playback singer while Puri acted the emotion of the song in real time. Puri later said that moment taught him how to 'act a song' without opening his mouth.
  • Zubeidaa (2001) was the last film Puri and Benegal made together. But the film's lead actress, Karisma Kapoor, won her first National Film Award for Best Actress because of it. Both Puri and Benegal had personally pushed for her casting over bigger names.
  • Benegal and Puri never socialized outside sets. But Benegal always called Puri 'Bhai' (brother) on set. Puri once told a journalist, 'He never praised me to my face. But I heard from others he called me his most disciplined actor.'
  • Shyam Benegal said about Puri after Zubeidaa: 'He was the only actor I knew who could make silence louder than a monologue. In Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, he barely spoke for 20 minutes of screen time, but you felt his presence in every frame.'
