Partnership facts

• They first worked together in Jaandaar (1979) because Vinod Mehra personally recommended Asrani to the director. Mehra had seen Asrani's comic timing in a stage play and told the team, 'He'll steal every scene if you let him.'
• In Satyamev Jayate (1987), Asrani improvised a whole 3-minute monologue about corruption while Vinod Mehra silently reacted. Mehra later told the editor, 'Don't cut his close-ups — my silence is only working because he's not stopping.'
• During the shoot of Bees Saal Baad (1988), Asrani's mother passed away. Vinod Mehra quietly took over his scenes for two days, telling the director, 'Let him grieve. I'll cover his lines — he'd do the same for me.' They never spoke about it publicly.
• Their only hit together, Gurudev (1993), directly launched the career of supporting actor Shakti Kapoor as a comic villain. Kapoor got the role because Asrani told the producer, 'If Vinod and I are the straight men, we need someone who can match our energy.'
• Asrani once said in a 1995 interview: 'Vinod and I never rehearsed. We'd just look at each other before a scene and one of us would whisper, 'You start, I'll catch up.' That's why our films feel like two friends talking, not two actors acting.'
