Long-Term Partnership

The Vivek & Shankar partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Boys (2003). Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They didn't share a set between 1994 and 2003.

From Urimai Oonjaladugiradhu (1992) to Padam Pesum (2016). Anniyan is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Urimai Oonjaladugiradhu; the 2010s to Padam Pesum. Shankar original music composer in some, director in others. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Shankar first approached Vivek for 'Boys' after seeing his stand-up act. But Vivek almost said no — he thought a full-length comedy role in a Shankar film would typecast him. Shankar convinced him by promising the character had real dramatic weight.
  • On 'Anniyan', Shankar gave Vivek a single instruction: 'Don't make the audience laugh. Make them uncomfortable.' Vivek’s character, a creepy psychiatrist, was written to be the opposite of his usual comic persona — and Shankar deliberately shot his scenes in tight close-ups to amplify the unease.
  • The 'Sivaji' success directly led to Shankar casting Vivek in 'Padam Pesum' — a film that was originally a standalone project. Shankar told press that Vivek’s performance in 'Sivaji' (as the loyal sidekick) made him realize he wanted to build a whole film around Vivek’s voice and timing.
  • During 'Boys' shoot in 2002, Vivek would stay back after pack-up to help Shankar rewrite scenes for the young cast. Shankar later said Vivek was the only actor he trusted to punch up dialogue without losing the film’s tone.
  • Shankar once said in an interview: 'Vivek is the only actor who can make me laugh during a serious scene and then nail the next take without breaking character. He’s a director’s cheat code.'
