Partnership facts

• Vivek and Vadivelu first shared screen space in Nandhavana Theru (1995) because director K. S. Ravi Kumar wanted two fresh comic voices to bounce off each other. Neither was a star yet — the film accidentally created Tamil cinema's most beloved comedy duo.
• In Viralukketha Veekkam (1999), Vivek wrote most of his own lines on set, while Vadivelu improvised wildly. The director let them go at it — Vivek would set up a logical joke, and Vadivelu would demolish it with a physical punchline. That push-pull became their signature.
• Their double-act in Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999) was so popular that the film's producer immediately greenlit two more comedies with them as the lead pair — Kandha Kadamba Kathir Vela (2000) and Koodi Vazhndhal Kodi Nanmai (2000). Those three films back-to-back cemented the 'comedy duo as heroes' trend in Tamil cinema.
• During the shoot of Subash (1996), which bombed hard, Vivek and Vadivelu shared a room in a cheap lodge in Kodaikanal. They spent nights rewriting each other's scenes because the script was so weak. Neither has ever publicly mentioned this — but the habit of fixing each other's lines started there.
• Vivek once said in a 2010 interview: 'Vadivelu and I never rehearsed. We'd just look at each other and start. If I laughed at his line, we kept it. If he laughed at mine, we kept it. That was our only rule.'
• In Shakalaka Baby (2002), their last film together, Vivek played the straight man to Vadivelu's chaos for the entire second half. The director later revealed that Vivek deliberately underplayed every scene to make Vadivelu's over-the-top reactions land harder — a selfless move that made the comedy timeless.
