Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Raja Rishi (1985), almost didn't happen. Director R. Sundarrajan originally wanted a different actor for Prabhu's role. Vijayakumar personally recommended Prabhu after seeing him in a stage play, and Sundarrajan agreed on one condition — Prabhu had to lose 10 kilos in two weeks. He did.
• In Ninaivu Chinnam (1989), Vijayakumar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in every scene with Prabhu. He told the crew he wanted Prabhu's natural, hesitant style to shine. The result? That film is still considered Prabhu's most emotionally raw performance.
• Senthamizh Paattu (1992) directly launched the career of composer Ilaiyaraaja's son, Karthik Raja. Prabhu and Vijayakumar both insisted the producer give the newcomer a break, and even took a pay cut to make the budget work. Karthik Raja's first hit song came from this film.
• On the sets of Vetri Karangal (1991), Vijayakumar started a ritual that lasted through all their films together: every morning before the first shot, he'd make Prabhu sit with him for 10 minutes and just talk about anything except cinema. Prabhu later said it was the only thing that calmed his nerves before intense scenes.
• After Kusthi (2006) bombed, they never spoke again. No fight, no fallout — just silence. Vijayakumar's son later revealed his father felt he'd 'failed' Prabhu by not choosing better scripts after the 90s. Prabhu has never publicly commented on the split.
