• Charlie and Janagaraj first shared screen space in 'Aayiram Pookkal Malarattum' (1986), but the director K. Rangaraj actually cast them as a comic duo after seeing their individual timing in separate films. Neither had worked together before, and the pairing was a last-minute experiment that clicked so well they did 11 more films.
• In 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi' (1988), Charlie played the fast-talking sidekick while Janagaraj was the slow, bewildered foil. Janagaraj once said in an interview that Charlie would set the rhythm of a scene with his rapid-fire delivery, and he would deliberately pause longer than normal to create a comedic gap — a trick they perfected together over 12 films.
• Their double-act in 'Gopura Vasalile' (1991) was so popular that it directly inspired a wave of buddy-comedy sidekicks in Tamil cinema through the 1990s, including the pairing of Goundamani and Senthil in later films. Directors started writing separate comic tracks specifically for two actors after seeing how Charlie and Janagaraj owned every scene together.
• Off-screen, Charlie and Janagaraj were close friends who lived in the same neighbourhood in Chennai during the late 1980s. They would often travel together to shoots in Charlie's old Fiat, and Janagaraj's wife would pack extra food for Charlie because he was a bachelor who couldn't cook.
• Janagaraj once told a Tamil magazine: 'Charlie and I never rehearsed. We'd just look at each other and start. If one of us laughed, the other would make it worse. That's why our scenes felt real — because we were genuinely trying not to crack up.'
• Their final film together, 'Piriyadha Varam Vendum' (2001), was the only one where they played brothers with a dramatic arc instead of pure comedy. The film's emotional climax — where Charlie's character dies in Janagaraj's arms — was reportedly shot in one take because both actors were too emotional to do it again.
