Partnership facts

• Vivek was a struggling comedian when Karan walked into a dubbing studio in 1996. Karan heard him crack a joke between takes and insisted the director cast him in Kaalamellam Kadhal Vaazhga (1997). That was their first film together.
• In Kannedhirey Thondrinal (1998), Karan played the intense lover while Vivek played the comic sidekick. But here's the trick: Vivek wrote most of his own lines on set, and Karan would adjust his performance to match Vivek's rhythm. Karan once said, 'He made me look smarter.'
• During the shoot of Thirunelveli (2000), Karan and Vivek shared a room in a small lodge for three weeks. They'd stay up late rewriting scenes together. Vivek later said that's when they became real friends, not just co-stars.
• Koodi Vazhndhal Kodi Nanmai (2000) was a flop, but it introduced a young comedian named 'Vivek' to a wider audience. Karan personally recommended him to other directors after that film. That recommendation led to Vivek getting his breakout role in Run (2002).
• Karan said in a 2012 interview: 'Vivek is the only actor who could make me laugh so hard I'd forget my lines. We'd have to reshoot because of him.'
• Their last film together, Kandha (2012), almost didn't happen. Karan had taken a break from acting. Vivek called him and said, 'If you don't do this film with me, I'm not doing it either.' Karan came back just for him.
