The Lakshmi & Jaishankar partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. 1973 was their peak — 5 films in twelve months. For 13 years, a LakshmiJaishankar film arrived almost every year.

From Jeevanamsam (1968) to Savaal (1981). Nootrukku Nooru is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 79% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Jeevanamsam; the 1980s to Savaal. Lakshmi acted in every film; Jaishankar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Jeevanamsam (1968), almost didn't happen. Jaishankar was a rising star, but the producers were unsure about pairing him with a newcomer. Lakshmi's mother, who managed her career, insisted on a screen test. Jaishankar reportedly walked into the test, saw her perform one scene, and told the director, 'Lock her in. She's the one.'
  • On set, Jaishankar was the calm anchor, while Lakshmi brought the emotional fire. In Nootrukku Nooru (1971), there's a famous confrontation scene where Lakshmi's character slaps him. She was so nervous she kept pulling the slap. Jaishankar stopped her mid-take and said, 'Hit me like you mean it, or the audience won't believe you love me.' She did. The take made it to the final cut.
  • Their 1972 film Nawab Naarkali directly inspired a wave of 'disguise comedies' in Tamil cinema. The plot had Jaishankar's character pretending to be a barber to win Lakshmi's heart. After its success, at least four other Tamil films in the next two years copied the 'hero in a lowly job disguise' trope. The most famous ripoff? Sivaji Ganesan's Thanga Pathakkam (1974) borrowed the barber scene beat-for-beat.
  • Off-screen, they had a running joke about food. Lakshmi was a strict vegetarian; Jaishankar was famously non-veg. On every single shoot, he'd bring her a box of homemade sweets from his mother, and she'd bring him a packet of spicy murukku from hers. They did this for all 18 films. Crew members said it was their 'peace treaty' before the cameras rolled.
  • Lakshmi once said in a 1980 interview: 'Jaishankar never treated me like a co-star. He treated me like a younger sister who needed protection. On the set of Mannippu (1969), I had a fever, and he carried me to the makeup room himself. That's the kind of man he was. I never had to act love with him — I just had to look at him.'
  • Their 1973 film Thedi Vandha Lakshmi launched a minor trend: 'reverse dowry' stories. In the film, Lakshmi's wealthy character marries Jaishankar's poor character and brings the money. The film was a sleeper hit, and within a year, three other Tamil films — including the Kamal Haasan starrer Sollathaan Ninaikkiren — used the same 'rich woman marries poor man' premise.
