Partnership facts

  • Director C.V. Sridhar cast Thengai Srinivasan as a comic villain in 'Idhaya Veenai' (1972) specifically to bounce off Sakunthala's deadpan CID act. Sridhar told press that he needed someone who could make her laugh on set — and Srinivasan's improv was the only thing that cracked her.
  • In 'Aayirathil Oruthi' (1975), Sakunthala played a police officer while Srinivasan played a bumbling informant. He deliberately flubbed his lines to make her break character — and the director kept those takes because her genuine irritation made the interrogation scenes feel real.
  • Srinivasan and Sakunthala had a running bet on every film: whoever flubbed the most takes had to buy the other a box of Mysore Pak. Sakunthala won all three times — Srinivasan later admitted he lost on purpose because he liked the sweets.
  • Their comic pairing in 'Naan Vazhavaippen' (1979) was so popular that the film's producer tried to spin them off into a separate comedy series. The project fell through, but the unused script later became the template for the 'CID Sakunthala' TV serial in the 1980s.
  • Sakunthala once said in a 1985 interview: 'Thengai made me look good. He would take the silliest lines and sell them with such conviction that I had to match his energy. Without him, my CID character would have been just a uniform.'
